Student Leadership Convention or better known as SLC has been organized by the Indian Undergraduates of University of Malaya for the past six years beginning in the year 2006. Apart from its objective to bring out their talents and polish their leadership skills, SLC creates a platform for student leaders from all over Malaysia to share their perspective and ideas on ways to uplift the Indian community for a brighter future. SLC also acts as a channel for student leaders to network and form a good rapport among them. Our vision for SLC is to be an effective platform to generate intellectuality, openness and harmony among undergraduates through national integration. Besides that, the mission that we’re working hard to accomplish is leadership that gives service and priority to undergraduates while promoting the university’s aspiration for a global recognition.
SLC is all about transformation. SLC has transformed over the years to create a better experience for our student leaders. SLC’06 started under the leadership of Mr. Delakan as the director. The theme for SLC ’06 was “Mahasiswa Pemangkin Kemajuan Masyarakat India” which means undergraduates are the catalyst for the development of the Indian community. The highlight in SLC ’06 was the submission of a memorandum pertaining to problems faced by our Indian Undergraduates to the then Works Minister, Dato’ Seri S. Samy Vellu.

In SLC ’07 with the leadership of Mr. Parthiban, a new vibe was created in SLC. With the theme “Pioneering Excellence”, we gave the delegates an experience that never before in the history of a project organized by undergraduates has ever accomplished. The delegates also experienced the technology of teleconferencing. This created a big impact and further reinforced the theme of SLC ’07. Furthermore SLC ’07 was also the year for the branding of SLC by the design of a logo.
Progressing to SLC ’08 with the theme “Be Inspired to be a Transformational Leader” we improved our organizational approach. We tried to work in a more corporate and professional environment with the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P) and Key Performance Index (K.P.I).
The essence of the convention was formed based on 4 main subject of concern. They are career, entrepreneurship, leadership and community service. The rationale behind this is, upon receiving their education, undergraduates should focus on ways and skills needed and following that one must have the leadership qualities to lead the community into a better future. And after attaining success, one must never forget social responsibility and service to the people. Besides that, we also came up with a plan called “THE RM10 PLAN”. This plan calls for Indian Undergraduates to contribute RM10 every month to aid Tamil Schools which are lacking in basic amenities like tables and chairs. And the greatest achievement of SLC ’08 was having Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India in University of Malaya. Held in Dewan Tunku Canselor, this public lecture created a positive impact within the crowd of 3000 who attended and was privilege to listen to the icon himself.
“Revolution towards Dynamism” is not only the theme for SLC ’09 but it shows that dynamism and vigor for success was the aim for SLC’09. A union of delegates since SLC ’06 until SLC’08 was accomplished by organizing a grand dinner. This dinner wasn’t only to celebrate the success of SLC but also to create an avenue for past and present delegates to meet inspirational, dynamic and successful personalities of the country.
SLC 2010 came up with a rather motivating and captivating theme, “Ignite the Leader Within.” This theme is an indication to all undergraduates to bring out the leadership quality within them in many aspects. Student Leadership Convention 2010 had not only a large number of delegates but also nearly 40 speakers from all over the nation. SLC 2010 triggered rigorous discussion amongst delegates that resulted in a resolution that we managed to present to the Prime Minister’s department. Our SLC 2010 resolution has gained nationwide recognition and approval and several issues raised in the resolution have already been solved with the help from the Prime Minister’s Department for instance one week holiday were given for Deepavali.
Continuing the significant endeavour of previous years, SLC’11 was themed ‘Spearheading Success Beyond The Boundaries’. This time, SLC’11 witnessed a gathering of 120 delegates from 22 public and private learning institutions. Similar to previous years, distinguished speakers graced the convention and left a lasting impact on the delegates. SLC’11 beamed its major focus on entrepreneurship and investment besides other agendas such as leadership and social empowerment and produced a very positive outcome. Adding feathers to its cap, last year’s edition also inspired two major student movements namely, National Medical Student Convention (NMSC) 2012 which was held at AIMST University, Kedah and the Tamil School Transformation Programme. These two programmes involve undergraduates from various higher learning institutions who were inspired in SLC 2011 to pay back the community.
In the previous years, SLC has been honoured with the presence of many great leaders such as, Tan Sri Nganalingam, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing, Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, Datuk Praba Thiagarajah, Datin Paduka Mother Mangalam, Dato Ambiga Sreenevasan, Dato’ AK Nathan, and Prof. Dr. Kader Ibrahim. This year, we aspire to invite similar prominent speakers who would be beneficial to the undergraduates and the community.
Mr. Delakan Ratha Krisnak, founder of SLC said that the convention remains a neutral ground to discuss and debate, simultaneously provoking thoughtful and effective ideas to be implemented in various private, government and NGO institutions in the country for the betterment of society. We always hold strong to our core values of building a strong career, igniting and enhancing leadership skills, endeavoring entrepreneurship and undertaking social responsibilities seriously. These values, we believe, cannot be seen in isolation, but must be integrated to achieve the ideal state in any individual.
The theme of this year’s SLC is “CHANGE: Are You Game?”. The Director of Student Leadership Convention 2012, Ms. Shalini Palraj mentioned it is high time undergraduates recognise that the evolution of the Indian society itself is a challenge for the community which is impacting its growth in the country in many ways. Therefore, the theme proposes to the undergraduates to step up and accept the challenges thrown upon them, to create fresh solutions and to initiate the trend of positive changes in the society. We aim to guide the undergraduates to set their goals and achieve the goals they set. And in order to achieve their goals, they must learn to strengthen their communication skills, teamwork ability and appreciating the opportunities around them. Miss Shalini Palraj also conveyed her sincere thanks to the founder, Mr. Delakan Ratha Krisnak and to those who have been the backbone of SLC 2012 and all the ex-officio, Mr. Parthiban Kandasamy, Mr. Vinoth Kumarasamy, Ms. Kamalashnee Jayapalan, Mr. Kumareshan Krishnan and Mr. Vithiaganant Vadiveloo.
