Vaanavil to commission 27 Tamil Dramas

Kuala Lumpur, 25th August 2010 – Astro Vaanavil continues to demonstrate its commitment to support the development of the Malaysian Indian Movie Industry with the launch of its Vaanavil Drama Producing Project 2010 for local production houses. Today, in the presence of Dato G Palanivel, Deputy Minister of Plantation Industry and Commodities Ministry, Dr.Rajamani Chellamuthu, Director of Astro’s Content Management Group, members of the Local Indian Movie Industry and members of the media, Astro Vaanavil has allocated RM 1 350, 000 (RM50K x 27) as a fixed grant of Ringgit Malaysia Fifty Thousand each for 27 successful Production Houses.

Led by Astro Vaanavil, the Drama Producing Project aims to provide opportunities to local production companies to produce more dramas for Astro, discovering new and fresh content at the same time. This is aligned with Vaanavil’s commitment to support the development of the Malaysian Indian Movie Industry by giving local content more airtime on its platform.

Astro had received close to 50 entries for this contest from all over the country. Production Houses or businesses which are incorporated in Malaysia with principal activities involving the audio and visual production of media content in general and with

FINAS license have sent in their entries for this project. 3 panels of well known filmmakers were appointed as judges to select 27 best scripts for the 2nd round based on the story, script, screenplay and the originality. These 27 selected applicants were called to attend the Pitching session to elaborate on their theme, screenplay, characterizations and cast.

A total of 27 with their own titles and screenplay will produce 2 episodes of 20-25 minutes each for Astro Vaanavil within the next 2 months. The allocation of Ringgit Malaysia Fifty Thousand (RM50K) will be given by ASTRO Vaanavil to the successful Production Houses. Each Participant will be given 40% (RM 20K) from the total allocated amount in advance to produce the drama. Subsequent 60% (RM 30K) amount will be given upon completion of the drama of 2 episodes. In general, Astro Vaanavil has contributed a total of RM 1 350,000 (RM 50K x 27) to the local production houses to produce dramas for Astro Vaanavil.

Dr. Rajamani Chellamuthu, Director of Astro’s Content Management Group, said “Local Talent Development is always being our ultimate objective and we have conducted various project/programs to create opportunity for the local talents. We have organized singing contest, dance competition, short film competition, classical song and dance competition, workshops and seminars, music training and many more projects to highlight and bring out the hidden skills of our local talents. We can proudly say that through all these programs we have introduced hundreds of new singing and dancing talents besides having unlimited musicians and talents performing on Astro’s platform. This is the first attempt by Astro Vaanavil venturing into Drama Production and we are proud to say that all the dramas will be produced by our local talents. Besides giving opportunity for the local producers and directors, this project also will create platform for the new actors, actress, writers, dancers and music directors.”

Be sure to catch all these Dramas on Vaanavil (Channel 201) starting from Ponggal 2011.
